How Plumbers Find and Clear Drain Blockages

With the holiday season right around the corner, the last thing you need is slow running drains in your bathroom or kitchen. Along with causing the drains to run slow, clogs can cause water to back up onto the floor. There are many reasons for drain blockages, including the following:

  • Soap build-up
  • Grease or food rinsed down a kitchen sink
  • Using too much toilet paper
  • Mineral build-up narrowing the pipe diameters
  • Objects being down the toilet

Finding the Blockage

There are several ways that London plumbers can find blockages and clear them. If they suspect a blockage is deep in a pipe or sewer line, they can use a CCTV drain camera to find it and determine from what substances the clog is made. Knowing its composition can help plumbers use the right technique to clear it.

Clearing Blockages

Most plumbers will try to use a drain cleaner on blockages to attempt to dissolve them, but if that doesn’t work, then they may try freeing the line with water jetting. A high-pressure water jet can clear both soft or solid residue in pipes. The residue found in drains can be from cement, scale, grease, hair, or other debris.

If the pipe has been narrowed due to scale build-up or the sewer line is broken, then your plumber may need to replace the line to fix the drainage problem. Once the drain is running freely again, try to watch what is put down your drains to prevent clogs from reoccurring. Preventing clogs will save you money and frustration as well.
